Camping numbers high despite fee increases


Despite fee increases that were imposed to offset the withdrawal of tax support, Wisconsin state park usage in 2016 was on track to be higher than average.

The number of camping registrations and nights camped in 2016 through Friday was greater than in any year since 2008 except for last year’s all-time record, according to figures released this week.

Park usage is highly dependent on weekend weather, gas prices and the overall economy, said state parks section chief Chris Pedretti, adding that 2016 was mostly a good year by those measures....

Ken Notes: We have a great park system and we could do so much more! Also since camping is a weekend thing for many, why not have a tiered rate structure that makes camping more affordable during the week.

We need more sites, more camping experiences from glamping in larger rv`s and micro cabins to serious hike in sites well off the beaten path and everything in between. We need to encourage and support public private partnerships to promote camping. We need to create parks for the new trend in micro / mini homes.

If we can bring just a few hundred additional Chicago area residents to Wisconsin each weekend, we can generate millions of dollars for our local Wisconsin economy.
