Essay: Thinking like a watershed


One autumnal afternoon a few weeks back, I drove down the Winooski River Valley from my home in Essex to meet with some former colleagues at the Intervale Conservation Nursery (ICN) in Burlington to talk about Lake Champlain.

I’ve recently returned from graduate studies in Montana, where I volunteered alongside other water-loving people working to restore their local watershed after decades of copper mining and industrial logging.

Since returning, I’ve been curious to catch up on the “water gossip” here in the Champlain Basin. Having also planted over 90,000 trees in the basin during my time with the ICN between 2006 and 2013, I was eager to hear how and if our efforts at restoration were paying off....
