Wisconsin moves toward eliminating nuclear power limits

Wisconsin legislators are moving toward getting rid of restrictions on nuclear power in the state.

The restrictions were enacted following the meltdown at the Three Mile Island plant in Pennsylvania in 1979. The Wisconsin State Journal reports state Assembly Democrats are joining Republican legislators who are pushing efforts to eliminate the restrictions.

Backers of the Assembly and Senate bills say new technology could someday lower nuclear power prices and make it economical to generate energy with the waste that's created.

The bills would put nuclear power ahead of natural gas and coal on the state's list of energy sources.

Environmental advocacy group Clean Wisconsin opposes the bills, saying it doesn't make sense to put nuclear power ahead of cheaper natural gas in an effort to reduce reliance on coal.
