Water rules help reduce runoff contamination


The state Natural Resources Board took a significant step forward last week to protect Wisconsin waters from contamination from farm runoff. Although the new rules may not be the “gigantic step forward” that Department of Natural Resources Secretary Cathy Stepp proclaimed them to be, they’re not baby steps either, and could do much to protect vulnerable waters.

Environmental groups were critical of the action earlier this month because they think the process is too slow — it won’t be done until 2018 — and doesn’t include large-scale farms, known as concentrated animal feeding operations, which may pose serious threats to wells in places such as Kewaunee County....
