Blue-green algae concerns in Northeastern Wisconsin lakes


OSHKOSH, Wis. (WLUK) -- On a calm backwater channel leading to Lake Winnebago in Menasha, Jeff Smolinski saod the blue-green algae typically arrives after the Fourth of July.

"It starts out as a really dark green. And it turns to a purple-turquoise, and it actually turns into a hardened surface," said Jeff Smolinski, Menasha.

Just around the bend, Menasha City Health Sanitarian Todd Drew monitors the algae growth. He said the blooms can be dangerous to people and pets too.

"When it forms, it does have the potential to produce a toxin which can cause skin irritation, eye irritation, and in some cases, if ingested, some gastro-intestinal symptoms," said Todd Drew, Menasha Environmental Health Sanitarian...
