Volunteers clean river

Kim Kettner of Friends of the Manitowoc River filed the following:

We cleaned the Manitowoc River with seven paddlers and two walkers. We collected 50 pounds of litter and a huge waterlogged sofa. 

Mother Nature was supposed to be cranky, but we chose to hold the event to an hour to get everyone off the river before 11 a.m. and stormy weather. 

Everything was on track, until one of our paddlers paddled up at 10:05 a.m. and wondered if we would be up to the task of removing a sofa from the river. It took us about an hour, but we were able to cut the cushions off the sofa and balance it on the canoe. 

Once we stabilized it, we paddled back to Schuette Park and managed to get it on shore....
