Wildlife laws ignored in Great Lakes pipeline plan, lawsuit claims


DETROIT, MI — The National Wildlife Federation claims in a new lawsuit that federal regulators improperly permitted a controversial oil pipeline under the Straits of Mackinac by failing to consider the potential affects an oil spill could have on Great Lakes shorelines and endangered wildlife.

In a 27-page complaint filed May 16 in U.S. District Court in Detroit, the wildlife nonproft claims the Pipeline Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) did not apply a suite of federal environmental law standards to the agency`s 2013 approval of spill response plans for the Enbridge Inc.
