Earth Day, observed on April 22 each year, is a time for people from all walks of life to demonstrate their contribution toward a cleaner and healthier environment. Forty-six years ago, Sen. Gaylord Nelson of Wisconsin had the vision of organizing a movement focused on bringing national attention to environmental issues across America. The first Earth Day in 1970 was a success, with more than 22 million Americans participating in demonstrations and events across the nation. Their participating spurred politicians to become active in environmental issues.

Like other officially recognized days, the celebrations can easily turn into organized events held over several days or a month. North Carolina Cooperative Extension, Robeson County Center, has two upcoming events that will give people a chance to show their environmental spirit.

The first event will be a free Pesticide Disposal Day, held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Robeson County Fairgrounds. All farmers, homeowners and landscape professionals are invited to participate in Pesticide Disposal Day, which is being presented through a partnership with the North Carolina Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services....
