Lead in drinking water is stubborn problem for dozens of places like Lake Mills


After lead-tainted drinking water in Flint, Michigan, exploded into a public health emergency last year, Lake Mills residents grew more vocal in their concerns about tests that have repeatedly found the toxic metal in their water.

Even small amounts can accumulate in the body to cause irreversible brain damage, slowed growth and, in rare cases, death, federal officials say. Children face the highest risk, and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control says there is no safe blood lead level in children.

Ken Notes: Again this is an infrastructure issue. Most if not all pre or early 1900 homes have lead water mains. Even much of the oldest community water system is lead. Some communities like Madison have replaced these systems. Others use treatment options to coat the interior of the pipe. We need to fix the problem but it is expensive and we are a litigious society with no one to sue. We started a replacement program in Neenah in 2000, but it is an easy budget item to adjust so almost 20 year later Neenah makes the list for having a problem.
