Xcel Energy asks for $17.4 million electric rate increase

Xcel Energy, the energy company that serves much of northern, west central and western Wisconsin, has asked the Wisconsin Public Service Commission (PSC) for a total of $22.2 million in natural gas and electric rate increases.

Under the Xcel proposal, the increase would take effect beginning Jan. 1, 2017.

The rate increases include a $17.4 million dollar hike, which amounts to an overall 2.4 average increase. Xcel said the typical customer using 750-kilowatt hours a month would see a $1.73 a month increase, amounting to 1.7 percent.

The extra revenues would be used to modernize transmission and distribution infrastructure to provide safe and reliable energy, said a news release issued by Xcel Energy. It would also be used to upgrade equipment at Prairie Island Nuclear Plant in Red Wing, Minn....

Notes: I thought the new rate structure was supposed to address the infrastructure issues. With fracking and low cost oil rates gas is at a multi year low production cost wise, and supplies are up. I also question whether these infrastructure improvements will be used to move power from the west through the state to points southeast If that is the case we (Wisconsin) should NOT be paying for it. I am very worried Xcel Power will be sold to companies servicing other markets. The wind, gas and solar power is from points west -- want to raise rates create the energy AND JOBS here in the state.
