Dramatically increasing environmental stewardship ethics and activities throughout the St. Croix River watershed is the goal of the new St. Croix Master Watershed Stewards pilot program — the first effort of its kind in Wisconsin. “For this watershed to be sustainable and our waterways to remain safe for drinking, recreation and supporting habitat, it will take more human resources than can be supported by the agencies and municipalities with professional staff,” said project liaison Danette Olsen. “We need a stewardship ethic for the 21st century and beyond to ensure clean, safe water for generations to come.” The St. Croix Master Watershed Stewards pilot program is based on a recognition that a watershed-wide response is needed for the health of the Lower St. Croix River, which, because of its phosphorus content, was declared an impaired water body in 2008 by the Environmental Protection Agency....
